When your tastes run toward the contemporary, you’ll find this sophisticated waterfront home on Doe Bay a jewel of design integrity.
In contrast to the whimsical clutter and Pottery Barn style of many Island Homes, Nami An offers a distinctive minimal esthetic. Japanese influences create a light-filled volume of space; every detail is precise and harmonious. You’ll remove your shoes and don slippers (thoughtfully provided,) to tread lightly on the bamboo floors. Shoji screens slide across the bedroom doorway; you’ll bathe in a deep Japanese soaking tub and shower next to a glass wall viewing a small fenced garden. (There’s also an outdoor shower in this courtyard.)
The main level encompasses the bathing room and powder room, a well-equipped kitchen with paperstone counters, dining area, and a bedroom with a floating queen-size futon bed. Upstairs, there’s an open loft with an additional bed and a folded futon for extra guests. (Do note that although there are shoji screens to slide as a visual block, the loft does not provide total privacy. This home is not suitable for small children or those who may have difficulty climbing the steep open stairway. Nami An is a meticulous home in a romantic setting that will be best appreciated by two or three adult guests.)
Nami An shares a beautiful outlook to the water with two other homes. There is no neighbor on the left side of the property where a wooded area attracts deer, hawks, and rabbits. To the right, two neighboring homes in the foreground of vision may be screened from view with the use of window and shoji screens. Forward of the home, there is a cleared path leading to a rocky outcrop and beach where you can observe an amazing diversity of tidal life and marine mammals at low tide.
You’ll find Nami An on the southeastern tip of Orcas Island, within a short walk of Doe Bay Resort where there is a convenience store, post office, kayak rental, and restaurant (plan to enjoy open mic and pizza night on Thursdays!)
This home is about a 15 minute drive from Olga and Moran State Park, about 30 minutes from Eastsound shops and dining, and about a 45 minute drive from the Orcas Ferry Landing.
